Renewable energy for a greener future

Vindin Vedbo is a wind project located on the municipal border between Aneby and Jönköping, Sweden and is owned by NTR’s second fund, NTR Renewable Energy Income Fund II, which invests in renewable energy assets for a number of European institutional investors. Today, NTR operates and manages over 600MW of wind, solar and battery storage assets throughout Europe. Further information on NTR can be found at www.ntrplc.com

Welcome to the Vindin Vedbo project.

The Vindin Vedbo project comprises 20 wind turbines distributed over two nearby wind power areas Knohult and Älgön, which are located on the municipal border between Aneby and Jönköping, Sweden, construction of which has begun in March 2021.
Welcome to the Vindin Vedbo project.

Overview

NTR was founded in 1978 to develop and operate Ireland's first toll bridge. In 1999, NTR invested in its first wind power project and in the following years has become a leading European investor in and asset manager of renewable energy projects. To date, NTR has invested in, designed and operated over 2.6 GW of onshore wind, solar and battery storage projects in several markets. In line with its commitment to Environmental, Social & Governance (“ESG”) factors, NTR has been awarded the "A+" rating for infrastructure investments in accordance with the UN Principles for Responsible Investment. NTR applies its extensive expertise and knowledge to invest in, design and operate renewable energy projects on behalf of institutional investors. NTR Renewable Energy Income Fund II (“NTR REIF II”), NTR's second fund for third party investors, plans to invest over EUR 300 million in onshore wind power, solar and battery storage projects in the Nordic countries, Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and the Benelux, with investments expected to amount to more than EUR 1 billion.

 In January 2019, the 200MW Vindin portfolio was acquired by NTR REIF II.  The wind portfolio consists of three operational wind farms totalling 94MW (Trattberget, Skutskär, Svakskulla) and two projected wind power projects totalling 108MW, which includes Norra Vedbo (86MW).

NTR Sweden Holdco 2 AB is NTR REIF II’s registered holding company for the Vindin portfolio and manages the current three operational wind farms. Vindin Vedbo AB holds the lease agreements and construction permits for the Vindin Vedbo project.

In order to best achieve the Sweden’s energy goal that it will have 100% renewable electricity production by the year 2040, the areas designated for wind power must be used efficiently.  Thanks to technological development, the Vindin Vedbo project can contribute to increased renewable energy production to a significantly greater extent than was anticipated when the permits were originally issued.

The development of Vindin Vedbo began in 2010 and after extensive investigations* and statutory permit processes, environmental permits were obtained for both sites (Knohult and Älgön) in 2016, with conditions for energy production to commence no later than December 2023.

Construction of Vindin Vedbo has begun in March 2021 at both sites (Knohult and Älgön) and is expected to be commissioned in Autumn 2022.

When complete, Vindin Vedbo will:

  • comprise 20 wind turbines, each with a tip height of 205m;
  • produce 86MW CO2-free electricity, enough clean energy to power c.44,000 households;
  • supply price area 3 (SE3) with renewable energy via Eon's regional network and the power station in Barkeryd;
  • generate a saving of c.8,000 tons of CO2 per year;
  • contribute to local projects through community funds; and
  • have contributed to employment, local and regional growth by using local entrepreneurs.

*The investigations were carried out in accordance with regular procedures in order to adapt the design of the wind farms for the least possible impact on natural and cultural values.

Location

Vindin Vedbo will be distributed over two nearby wind power areas Knohult and Älgön, which are located on the municipal border between Aneby and Jönköping, Sweden.
  • Knohult will comprise 12 wind turbines and is located in Aneby and Jönköping municipalities between road 132 and road 975.
  • Älgön will comprise 8 wind turbines and is located in Aneby municipality north of road 975.

All project related traffic to and from the sites will be directed to road 132 and road 975 via the permitted site entrances and internal road networks.

Timeline

The establishment of the Knohult and Älgön wind farms has begun in 2021 with the aim of being operational in early autumn 2022. This timeline will be continuously updated as more detailed information is available from the contractors.

Milestones

The Vindin Vedbo project was initiated as early as 2010 and has since developed environmental permits and gained new owners. In 2020, the detailed design was completed and in 2021, work will begin on realizing the wind farms.

Detailed design of Norra Vedbo will be completed in 2020. In 2021, infrastructure work will be carried out in the park area and include strengthening of roads, establishment of crane sites, burial of power cables and casting of foundations. In the spring of 2022, delivery of the turbines is planned for erection and connection to Eon's regional network. The production of renewable electricity is expected to start in early autumn 2022 to be distributed further in the region via Barkeryd's power station.
